Early Learning Center

St. Martin Center Early Learning Center (SMELC), located at 1727 State Street (corner of 18th and State Streets), provides care for children between the ages of six weeks and 13 years. The state-of-the-art facility also offers preschool curriculum, as well as before and after school care.

SMELC offers field trips, meals and snacks, an enclosed outdoor playground and so much more. The staff are compassionate, experienced, and truly care about and take time with each child.

SMELC has a Keystone STARS 4 (Standards, Training, Assistance, Resources and Support) rating, which is the highest rating that can be achieved. Keystone STARS is an initiative of the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) and utilizes best practices to promote early learning environments. The standards address staff qualifications and professional development, the early learning program, partnerships with family and community, and leadership and management.

SMELC's model of teaching sets them apart from other centers. They are more than just a traditional daycare center as they make the effort to care for the entire family at all times. They follow a Continuity of Care model, which is unique to Erie County centers. With Continuity of Care, a child stays with the same group of children and teachers from the time they enter SMELC until they reach Pre-School age. The child then moves to a new class at a time that mimics the transition to school. This helps teachers, children, and families to develop a close, trusting bond that allows for better child development and family care. As teachers and staff get to know families and any needs, they assist with referrals to St. Martin Center's other programs and other agencies in the area. This truly allows SMELC to serve the whole family unit.

St. Martin Center Early Learning Center is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare. Childcare tuition assistance is available.

SMELC's hours of operation are 6:30am-5:30pm.
